Do you need to Hire a DJ?
Hi! I am trying to think of ideas to save money on a wedding … we have talked about the possibility of not hiring a DJ and instead just setting up stereo equipment borrowed from a friend, and hooking up our laptop which has over 4000 songs (most of which are downloaded legally on itunes). So I figure if we only played the songs downloaded on itunes, it would be legal, and we could just create a playlist for the reception and then let guests request songs that are on the computer. But, is it important to hire a DJ? Are there other things they do that we would need them for? Or can’t the MC just make the announcements that the DJ would normally make?
I am all for saving money but there are some things that you need to spend a bit more on in order to make things go smoothly. A dj is not required but having attended weddings where the couple chose the music themselves and put it on an ipod or computer, they would have much better off going the dj route because guests left early due to bad music presentations. A dj has the experience to be able to read the crowd and what they respond to and don’t and adjust the music accordingly. With a preset list, that isn’t an option. Also, the music you like might be fun to listen to but isn’t danceable. That happens alot.
The best djs are the ones that play the music and don’t say anything else unless they are told to. You don’t need an MC. Most adults are mature enough to be able to figure out on their own what is happening as it happens.
